Compared to the surge in imports following the longshoreman labor strikes in 2015, March cargo volumes at the major North American ports fell significantly.
TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) volumes dropped 14.4% year-over-year and inbound loaded containers tumbled 23.8%.
However, on a rolling 12-month basis, total container volume grew 5.0% and loaded imports rose 6.6%.
CBRE Research monitors TEU volume activity at the 13 largest ports in the U.S., Canada and Mexico and reports on the monthly and annual trends. Collectively, these ports represent approximately two-thirds of total North American volume.
